The story is exciting throughout, you can't guess what will happen next, and it gathers pace towards the final showdown at the end - and a marvellous end it is, very satisfying.

This is probably the most modern vampire story I've ever read. Set in contemporary London, during a few weeks in the run up to the midwinter solstice, where the great vampire festival is being held each year, the story is told by a number of different individuals. Some are vampires, some are human.
The author has managed with skill to make it so that all the different voices are unique. Each gives their version of events and this is how we learn about their society and their laws, especially the Covenant, the holy law that governs their conduct.
The story is exciting throughout, you can't guess what will happen next, and it gathers pace towards the final showdown at the end - and a marvellous end it is, very satisfying.
A great story, unusual, memorable and timeless.
